Presenters

Doctor Diane Pruneau is Professor at the Université de Moncton, in Canada. Specialized in environmental education, she is the Director of the Littoral et Vie Research Group, that conducts various research projects and pedagogical interventions in environmental education. The research group’s objective is to educate adults and young people to environmental subjects to help them become aware of the state of their environment and to accomplish environmental actions. Dr Pruneau’s research programs have dealt with the understanding of the link people have with their environment, health and environmental education, climate change education, teaching science in a minority language community, sustainability competences and the use of design thinking in environmental education.

Edward Appiah is Senior lecturer and Coordinator of Research and Postgraduate Studies at the Department of Communication Design, KNUST, Kumasi. He completed his doctoral studies in Design Education and Social Innovation at the Faculty of Informatics and Design, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Cape Town, South Africa. His research interests are in Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability, and Computers and Technology in Design Education. He is the local Coordinator for Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability (DESIS), a network of design labs, based in design schools and design-oriented universities, actively involved in promoting and supporting sustainable change. A member of the Design Research Society of UK, Edward is the Vice President of Design Ghana, a non-profit inter-university initiative comprising design educators, researchers, and design advocates. Eddie Appiah is reviewer for five international journals and moderates post graduate education in the area of technology in education and Design for Social Innovation.

Architect, PhD in Interior Architecture and Exhibition Design at Politecnico di Milano with the thesis “Wandering Hospitality. Temporary Interiors for Urban Events” (2016). She’s currently developing her research and professional practice in the field of interior architecture and design focusing on new processes of transformation and hybridization of interior spaces like the system of contemporary hospitality (hotel, hostels, urban camping), spaces for working and production. She is also interested in temporary architecture and exhibitions, as well as trends research for the interior design field and future lifestyles.

Since 2010 she collaborates as assistant lecturer in interior architecture and interior design at Politecnico di Milano, being involved in several didactic activities: research projects, lectures, mentoring for thesis, workshops. She is tutor for the Executive Master in Design Management for Innovative Environments led by POLI.design – Milano and Tongji University – Shanghai. Since 2016 she has worked as adjunct professor at School of Design, Politecnico di Milano. In 2018 Elena has become member of LeNSlab POLIMI - Research Lab on Design and Innovation for Sustainability.

Elena is also interior designer at Salamanca Design&co., where she mainly develops projects for events, fairs and concepts for the interior design field (www.salamancadesign.com).

Emilio Rossi is CEO at Emilio Rossi Design Consulting (Italy) and Adjunct Professor of Industrial Design in the Department of Architecture at the University of Chieti-Pescara (Italy). 
He received a PhD in Industrial Design (Architecture and Urban Planning Program) (2014) and a Master in Architecture (2010) at University of Chieti-Pescara (Italy); he also obtained a Master in Euro-Project Management (2013) at Europa Cube Innovation Business School (Italy). In 2013, he was a Visiting Researcher at Brunel University London (UK). His research interests revolve around the areas of: 1) Design for Social Inclusion in new product development; 2) Sustainable Human Centred Design; 3) Development of new technologies, tools and methods for sharing know-how; 4) 3D Printing for product innovation. 
He is Co-Chair of the AHFE Affiliated Conference on Additive Manufacturing, Modeling Systems and 3D Prototyping and a Member of the IEA Technical Committee on Human Factors and Sustainable Development. Professionally, he works in the fields of new product development, design research and strategic innovation, with a focus on Sustainability and Social Inclusion.

For over two decades he has been working in the field of design for sustainability. Most recently, his interests have focused on social innovation, considered as a major driver of sustainable changes. In this perspective he started DESIS: an international network of schools of design, active in the field of design for social innovation and sustainability (http://www.desisnetwork.org).

Presently, he is a Distinguished Professor of Design for Social Innovation at Elisava-Design School and Engineering, Barcelona, Honorary Professor at the Politecnico di Milano and Guest Professor at both, Tongji (Shanghai) and Jiangnan (Wuxi) Universities.

In addition to his continuous involvement in the design for sustainability arena, he has explored and promoted design potentialities in different fields, such as: Design of Materials (‘80s); Strategic Design (‘90s); Service Design most recently.

Most recent books: “Design, When Everybody Designs. An Introduction to Design for Social Innovation”, MIT Press 2015 (currently translated in 7 languages); and “Politics of the Everyday.” Bloomsbury (February 2019).

Francesca Casnati is communication designer and research fellow at the Design Department of Politecnico di Milano. She graduated in communication design – master degree level - in 2016 at the School of Design, Politecnico di Milano, with a thesis on female representation and gender stereotypes in the media.

As Research Fellow she works on the European project “Life-TTGG” about sustainability, communication design model for packaging system design.In addition to her work as a research fellow, she works as teaching assistant on the “Communication Design  and Gender Culture” course in the Design Master Degree – School of Design, Politecnico di Milano - and on “Laboratorio di Sintesi Finale”course about communication design for welfare.

Francesco Fittipaldi, Architect and designer, Ph.D. in Total Quality Management, is a research fellow in industrial design at the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli - Department of Architecture and Industrial Design (DADI). He carries out professional activity, in the field of transportation design, in numerous Italian manufacturing companies. He has also worked in the aeronautical field realizing the interior studies for ALENIA for the SSJ100 SUKOY aircraft and subsequently the interior design and ergonomics for the TP90 Alenia Aermacchi. The projects carried out include the Freccia Flaminia, MetroCampaniaNordEst (MCNE) and SEPSA / Cumana trains, both currently in operation. Lately he has collaborated with TFA (Titagarh Firema Adler SpA) for numerous projects in the railway sector and with CRRC for the development of railway design for high-speed trains for the US and European markets.

Francesco Gerli is currently PhD student at the Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering of Politecnico di Milano. He is member of Tiresia, the International Research Center promoted by the School of Management of Politecnico di Milano pursuing scientific excellence in the field of Social and Impact Innovation. Francesco completed his Master of Science in Economics and Social Sciences at Bocconi University with a thesis about the relationship between governances and performances of Social Policies. After a collaboration with the Centre for Child Well Being and Development of the University of Zurich, his research interest currently focuses on Social Innovation and Local Development, specifically investigating the role of Social Entrepreneruship face with the challenges of Economic and Territorial Inequalities.

Architect, PhD in Interior Architecture, Francesco is Associate Professor in industrial design at the Design department – Politecnico di Milano. He carries out research, teaching and consulting in the field of hospitality and he is the author of many publications and researches. Involved into the interior and the furnishing product design, the relationship with the areas related to management, the corporate image and services in a complex system like the hotel building. Since 2012 he is scientific director of the Master in Interior Design – Polidesign. He contributed in many conferences and events discussing the trends and new design scenarios dedicated to hospitality.
