This review seeks to update our knowledge about the positive effects in the use of VR head-mounted displays (HMDs)
for immersive systems in the aid of human well-being and quality of life. Through a systematic Literature review
which includes all peer-reviewed research documents that are relevant to the objective to ensure a comprehensive
search. Four research databases were identified: (I) web of Science, (II) IEEEExplore, (III) ScienceDirect and (IV)
PubMed. Only primary empirical studies on the use of HMDs were included. The review identified a number of
situations where HMDs are useful for aid and improvements of the human well-being, rehabilitation, and improvement
in the quality of life, thus, contributing in the field of sustainability study. Although there are several studies,
more research is needed on the use of this technology within settings to ensure recommendations that can implement
the improvement of use for social sustainability and sustainable development.

This paper reports on the Design-for-Sustainability (DfS) approaches practiced in Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Peru to help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The study is part of a project funded by the Council on Australian Latin American Relations (COALAR) titled ‘South-to-South: activating Australian Latin American Cooperation through Sustainable Design Education’, which is a collaborative endeavour of DfS educators from 8 universities in the above-named countries. The current phase of the project involves an initial collection of 60 case studies of products, services and systems that deliver positive impacts to society, the environment and the economy in the Australia and Latin America. The SDG case studies will be shared, discussed and built on during the upcoming LeNS South-to-South educators’ symposia, students’ workshops and research collaboration dialogues.

Wouldn’t it be easier that we all agree on the perspective to tackle contemporary problems? That we have a clear vision
on the future and based on it we choose our stand or react to a situation. If for instance, a caravan of thousands
of migrants arrives to our country: what is the best perspective? What is the future that we want to create? What is
the way of acting with full integrity? And more important, what are the values that guides us? Why are so many people
choosing to become vegetarian, buying solar cells for their homes or rain collectors, choosing to use their bicycle
over their car? Is it just a trend? Is the level of consciousness really rising in the society? Designers are taking a stand
and working actively for proposing ideas into the wicked problems and driving social innovation. As a guild, there
should be agreements and a shared heterogenic vision.
