Agricultural practices in cities have evolved to what is commonly described today as urban agriculture (UA). The term is often used ambiguously and can encompass a wide variety of agricultural practices that are carried out within the city, which can generate confusion and doubts about the real scope of UA. The claimed benefits sometimes portray UA as a sort of urban activity that is capable of providing a long list of benefits. However, cases have been made that critique some of the claims and numbers reported on UA. Also, as interests in AU grows, a better understanding of how UA cases operate would allow better design, planning an operation of urban farms. For these reasons, a more methodical, in depth characterization of cases should be considered. This paper proposes a methodical characterization based on the multiple functions and dimensions of UA based on the results of two case studies.

Through analyzing the process of design and research in the children’s furniture work, “Accompany”, the paper explores
the relationship between the behavior of children aged 3-12 and their furnitures, and proposes the concept of
“sustainability” in children’s furniture design, which is proposed to be “growing up” along with the growth of children.
The “Accompany” is assembled by the limited number of standard wooden parts and hardware, and able to be
re-assembled to the new furnitures by choosing the different combinations of the standard parts and fittings. This
design fits the characteristics and behaviors of children in their fast growing period of time. “Accompany” provides
the sustainable usages to meet the demands of rapid growth of children.

This paper mainly adopts the shared sustainable design method and theory to carry out research and design on children’s
toys in the community, in order to promote the sustainable development of the community, analyse the current
situation and existing problems of children’s toys in the sustainable community, and then make corresponding
design solutions and design evaluation. At last, this paper summarizes and forecasts the expected sustainable lifestyle
of the toy sharing system for children based on sustainable community. Through the research and design of sharing
children’s toys, this paper points out that sharing design of sustainable community, especially the sustainable lifestyle
described in children’s toy-sharing design, has a promising future.
